Winners' Viewpoints: The Great 1927 Trans-Pacific Dole Race is available at the link. What was it like to fly from Oakland to Honolulu in a single-engine plane during August 1927? Was the 25,000 dollar prize worth it? Did the resulting fame balance the risk? For the first time ever, this book presents the pilot and navigator's stories written by them within days of their record-setting adventure. Pilot Art Goebel and navigator William V. Davis, Jr. take us with them on the Woolaroc, their orange and blue Travel Air monoplane (NX869) as they enter the hazardous world of Golden Age trans-oceanic air racing.

PHOTOGRAPH AND DOCUMENT COLLECTION

First World Flight

April 6 - September 28,1924

The First World Flight airplanes visited the Davis-Monthan Airfield about a year before the Register was in place. You will not find in the Register mention of the aircraft you see in this section of the Cosgrove Collection.

I include these images because their pilots and crew, Ogden, Wade, Harvey, Smith, Arnold and Nelson did sign the Register at later dates, flying different aircraft. For most of them, the First World Flight was their 15-minutes of fame that remained with them the rest of their lives.

The 45 images presented in this section of the Cosgrove Collection are from a bound photo album. Most were taken by Mr. Cosgrove, Jr. when the fleet visited Tucson on September 21-22, 1924. The fleet was just a week away from completing its round-the-world mission, which terminated in Seattle, WA (left sidebar).

Note the period photo album with black pulp paper labeled with white ink and a nib pen. Mr. Cosgrove, III disassembled the album for me in order to enable flat, higher quality scans. Unless otherwise noted, the images were scanned at 200dpi. Please note also: other than cropping, sizing and optimizing the images for web display, they are unretouched in any way.

Click on the thumbnails below to view larger images, and additional information where available. To my knowledge, this is the first time these images have been made available to the public. We should all be grateful to C.B. Cosgrove, III (right sidebar) for allowing us to share in the important Golden Age history recorded in his father's original photographs.
